Explosion rocks Military Barracks as Govt reacts, calls for calm

The Borno State Government has confirmed a fire incident at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri late Wednesday night, April 30, 2025, around 10:30 p.m., which triggered a series of explosions and sparked widespread panic across the city.

In a statement issued by the Directorate of Fire Service under the Ministry of Information and Internal Security, authorities revealed that the blaze originated in the barracks’ ammunition storage area, leading to the detonation of munitions and several loud blasts.

A joint firefighting effort involving personnel from the Nigerian Army Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and Borno State Fire Service successfully brought the situation under control and extinguished the flames.

Residents have been advised to remain calm, as there may still be secondary explosions that could produce loud noises in nearby areas.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the intense heat in Maiduguri around this time of the year may have triggered the fire.

“The combined team of firefighters remains at the scene,” stated the directorate.
