Ex-Court of Appeal President speaks on eligibility or otherwise of Goodluck Jonathan to contest presidency
Justice Ayo Salami, former President of the Court of Appeal, has clarified why former President Goodluck Jonathan cannot legally contest the 2027 presidential election.
Salami pointed to the Nigerian Constitution, which limits any individual to a maximum of eight years in office as President.
He noted that Jonathan had already completed the remainder of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term before serving his own full term, making him constitutionally ineligible for another tenure.
In a recent opinion piece, Salami emphasised that any attempt by Jonathan to run in 2027 would constitute a breach of the law, and that any electoral victory in such a scenario would likely be overturned by the courts.
“It is painstakingly and dispassionately demonstrated that the ambition of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contest for the office of the president in the 2027 general election is effectively and undoubtedly shot down,” Salami stated.
