Eight alleged fake Pastors arrested over violation of security laws

The Anambra State Government has commenced legal proceedings against eight clerics arrested in different parts of the state over alleged violations of the Anambra Homeland Security Law, 2025.

The suspects were arraigned on Friday at the State Judiciary Complex in Awka following their arrest in Onitsha, Awka and other locations across the state.

The defendants are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

Confirming the development, the media adviser to the Anambra State Governor, Ejimofor Opara, said the clerics, whom he described as “fake pastors”, were prosecuted for alleged breaches of the state’s security law.

The Homeland Security Law came into effect in February 2025 as part of measures introduced by the state government to tackle criminal activities and regulate practices considered harmful to public safety and social order.

The legislation also targets activities linked to deceptive wealth-creation schemes and other practices deemed capable of misleading members of the public.

The latest arraignment follows a series of enforcement actions carried out under the law. Last year, several native doctors accused of promoting get-rich-quick rituals and related practices were arrested by state authorities.

While some of those arrested have reportedly been convicted and sentenced, others are still facing trial in court.

The prosecution is being led by the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
