Sokoto State Govt clears air on alleged reports Gov Aliyu joined Alex Otti to visit Kanu in Prison

The Sokoto State Government has dismissed reports claiming that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to visit detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Governor’s spokesman and Director General of Media and Publicity, Abubakar Bawa, described the reports as false and misleading.

He clarified that Governor Aliyu had no involvement in Otti’s private visit to the facility.

The clarification follows a recent Federal High Court ruling that sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment.

In response to the judgment, Governor Otti visited the Sokoto prison to meet with Kanu and assured that renewed efforts were underway to pursue his release.

The Sokoto government explained that at the time of Otti’s visit on November 30, 2025, Governor Aliyu was in Saudi Arabia performing the Lesser Hajj.

“Upon Dr. Otti’s arrival at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, he was received by selected Commissioners and Special Advisers, who later accompanied him to the Government House for the customary courtesies extended to visiting state governors,” the statement said.

Bawa added that the people of Sokoto are known for their hospitality and accord due respect to all visitors, regardless of tribe or religion.

According to the statement, Governor Aliyu remains committed to national unity, respectful of constituted authority, and continues to uphold peace and the rule of law.
