COVID 19: 4 people confirmed dead as Police others foil jailbreak
It was reported that on Tuesday 31/03/2020, inmates of Maximum Custodial Centre in kaduna state attempted a jailbreak.
This, according to a report, is as a result of the fear that gripped the heart of the inmates that they might contract coronavirus in the highly congested place.
This incident, according to a source, led to the brawl and the prison authorities had to seek for reinforcement from the army, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps before the situation was effectively controlled.
Confirming the news in a statement released on Saturday, the Controller of Corrections, Kaduna State Command, Sanusi Mu’azu Danmusa confirmed the death of the four inmates who sustained injuries during the jailbreak. He explained that the four inmates were from the condemned section of the custodial centre where the jailbreak occurred.
Narrating what led to the death of the inmates, Danmusa said, “This release is necessary to assure the public that the command and indeed the service are not trying to hide any fact as purported by a section of the press, especially when life is involved.
“Four inmates later died in the hospital from the injuries sustained in the melee that ensued while being restrained by the custodial officers from breaking (out of) jail. For the avoidance of doubt, all the deceased inmates were from the condemned section of the custodial centre where the jailbreak occurred.”
He however added that a comprehensive investigation have commenced on the directive of the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Jafaru Ahmed. He finally added that while 10 officers were injured during the encounter, no inmates escaped from the correction center.
