Contractors place Coffin at Finance Ministry, protest unpaid debts

Contractors under the banner of the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN) escalated their protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Tuesday by placing a coffin at the main entrance of the ministry’s headquarters.

The demonstrators, who have been holding a continuous protest over unpaid debts, said the symbolic display was meant to reflect the hardship and loss their members have suffered due to the federal government’s prolonged failure to settle outstanding obligations.

Speaking to Daily Trust, one of the association’s executives said the coffin represents the lives lost as members struggled under mounting financial pressure.

He stated, “Even last week we buried a member, Abdulganiyu. This has been going on for long. And it’s unacceptable. We lost six members recently due to high blood pressure.”

The contractors accused the government of “attempting to push them out of business,” insisting the debt crisis has devastated their livelihoods and endangered the welfare of hundreds of families across the country.
