Boko Haram terrorists kill Nigerian Army University Prof after one year in captivity
Professor Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State, has been confirmed dead while in the custody of Boko Haram insurgents.
El-Jummah was abducted by the terrorists on March 3, 2025, while travelling from Biu to Maiduguri. The attack occurred along the Damaturu–Buni Yadi–Biu road, a route that has witnessed repeated insurgent activity.
Family sources said the confirmation of his death came after the insurgents contacted relatives to relay the news.
According to them, the professor reportedly died after falling ill during his captivity, which lasted for nearly a year.
“They said he felt sick and died after spending almost a year in captivity. We were devastated by the news, but we performed the funeral prayer in absentia,” a family member told Daily Trust.
The source expressed appreciation to sympathisers who stood by the family during the prolonged ordeal, thanking them for their prayers and support.
In honour of the late academic, funeral prayers were conducted in absentia on Thursday at about 2:00 p.m.
The prayer was held at the Ngomari Old Airport Juma’at Mosque near his residence, drawing hundreds of mourners from the academic community and the wider public.
Another prayer session was also observed at the family house around the same time.
