Angry Students protesting abduction of two colleagues, block expressway

Following the kidnapping of two of their colleagues, students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori in Ogun State on Wednesday blocked the Lagos-Abeokuta road.

The students, who had earlier marched to the nearest police station to their school, barricaded the main road linking Abeokuta and Sango-Ota and Lagos, chanting alluta songs with various placards.

According to reports, they said police failed to respond to calls when gunmen struck at one of their hostels at Afowowa, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun and whisked away their fellows.

Eyewitnesses said during the protest, commuters were held in traffic for hours as the protest gather storms with the student insisting they will continue until the kidnapped students are rescued.


One of the protesting students, who spoke to newsmen during the protest, said: “The gunmen attacked a hostel at Afowowa and operated for almost four hours. They made away with laptops and other belongings of our colleagues. We called the police but there was no response. Later, the police said their vehicle was not in good condition.

“When they finally arrived, they said the students should lead in facing the gunmen. One of the students was shot in the leg and others were badly injured. That is why we took to the street to protest.”

While commenting on the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was aware of the demonstration, but has not been fully briefed about its cause.
