Eight passengers dead, others injured in ghastly expressway accident
The Oyo State government has confirmed that at least 8 people were killed in a fatal collision between an 18-seater passenger bus and a stationary truck along the Oyo/Ogbomosho Expressway in Oyo town.
Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, disclosed the details in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He said the crash occurred directly in front of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, noting that the first emergency call came in at 06:21 hours on Tuesday, 25th November 2025.
According to him, fire service personnel were immediately deployed to the site, where preliminary findings revealed that the bus veered off course and rammed into the parked Howo truck.
Akinwande said, “The collision triggered a fire that engulfed both the trailer and the bus, trapping passengers inside.”
He added that on arrival, responders found that the “18-passenger Mazda bus, registration number GWL 687 XB (Kano), had swerved and crashed into a stationary Howo trailer, registration number LSR 340 XW (Lagos), from the rear.
“The trailer caught fire, and our fire crew quickly initiated rescue operations and extinguished the blaze.”
The fire service recovered many bodies from the burnt vehicle, while three survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Akinwande blamed the tragedy on excessive speed and the unsafe practice of leaving heavy-duty vehicles parked along major highways.
He warned that these hazards continue to endanger road users.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to fully establish the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
